到今年夏天 CFINS 已经毕业了六个博士生(陆宝森教授, 曹希仁教授,与我每人毕业了二个.Coreection: the fifth one 王永才 is the student of Prof. Zheng Da-Zhong, resident faculty member of CFINS but not part of the oversea 教授团).我请他们每人写一些自己的读博经验.我答应他们每人写什么我就贴什么.绝对一字不改.下面六篇文章就是这六位巳经毕业拿了博士学位后写的

1. 我在智网中心读博的几点体会

书包、行李、录取通知书,在八月的最后一个周末,伴随着一张张好奇、欣喜、略带迷茫的新面孔,清华迎来了她的新一年。而这个时间段也是即将推研的同学们最忙碌的时期,最需要理清思绪的时期。工作还是读书?出国还是读研?读硕士还是博士?读哪个方向、哪位老师?这些问题时常被学弟学妹们问起,于是勾起了我对往事的回忆。2002年至2006年期间我在清华大学自动化系智能与网络化系统研究中心(下文简称智网中心)攻读博士学位,师从何毓琦教授与赵千川教授。本文与各位同学分享我在智网中心读博的几点体会,希望能对即将推研的同学略有帮助。

规划人生。时间面前,人人平等,每人每天二十四小时。为了充分利用时间,许多人都有制定计划的习惯,读书计划、培养方案、研究计划、锻炼计划、旅游计划等等。人生,也需要规划。当面试时何老师问我未来的五年规划、十五年规划时,规划人生的重要性就在我心中留下了深深的烙印。因为我们是控制科学与工程学科的,所以何老师把定计划、执行计划、改进计划的过程形象地描述为“反馈控制”,即制定一个五年计划,做半年,然后看看做得怎样,是不是在朝着正确的方向走,不是,就要及时调整。制定切实可行的计划能帮助我们明确目标,排除干扰,专心致志,学有所成。当我们面临推研的若干选择难以抉择时,不妨聆听自己的心声,问问自己想过怎样的人生。如果选择攻读博士学位,不管是在国内还是国外,应当不是为了一个称号、一个名誉、一个光环,而是为了接受对科学研究能力的培养和训练,为今后走上科研道路打基础。研究生的大部分时间是自己的,需要自己决定做什么、怎么做,明确的计划能给我们克服困难的勇气,减少浪费的时间。

脚踏实地。计划虽然重要,但好的研究成果往往不是计划出来的。虽然结果不能控制,但过程是可以控制的。做研究时,不能急功近利,而要脚踏实地,扎扎实实地分析问题、解决问题。在不少人眼中,做研究经常是枯燥的,有时甚至是令人沮丧的,但为什么我们还会热爱它呢?因为如果一个问题适合你,你会像做游戏一样成天游乐其中,流连忘返。而且如果你幸运的解决了一个问题,那一刻,你是唯一知道这个秘密的人,而这会带来无尽的满足与欢乐。智网中心的老师们向我展示了这样的学术人生,帮助我体会到这样的快乐与激情。根据我的浅薄理解,这种快乐才是吸引科研工作者长期从事科研工作的根本原因,而这背后是恬静淡雅的心态,是脚踏实地的努力。

问题驱动。科研选题的重要性不言而喻。科技创新已成为我国的一项基本国策。如何选题呢?何教授已在多篇博文中进行了讨论。这一点上,智网中心训练我们要从事问题驱动的研究,即:从实际问题出发,提炼、发现科学问题,进而加以解决。可别小看来了这句话,做起来并不容易。但是从锻炼研究能力的角度来看,这是根本方法。智网中心的每位学生都有机会从事实际背景明确的科研课题。做课题本身不是目的,通过课题向工程实际学习、了解哪些问题是实践中真正关心的,这才是目的。这种研究方法虽然出成果、发论文慢,但是能够找到真正重要的科研方向,进而做出好的研究成果。曾经听说导师的职责是把学生带到学术前沿,找到重要的研究方向,能做到这一点就是好导师。那么,我觉得智网中心的老师是好导师,因为他们能教会你如何选择重要的研究课题。这种训练让我获益匪浅。

学无止境。真正的学者是知道自己不知道,并且乐于学习的,不论何时何地。这种学术人生是智网中心老师们的真实写照。虽然博士是学位体系里面的最高一层,但对于一生的学习经历而言,请允许我借用丘吉尔的话“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”在智网中心接受的培养与训练,把我带入了一个新的天地,让我喜爱上科研生活。回想刚进智网中心的时候,老师对我们说,成立智网中心的目的是为了让中国的优秀学生不用走出国门即可在系统与控制领域接受世界一流的科研训练。我很自豪现在已从智网中心毕业,也很希望有更多的优秀学生能够被智网中心录取,因为,这里真的很不错。

最后想补充的一点是,在有条件的时候,我们应尽量选择自己感兴趣的事情,因为快乐的生活是无价的。如果你对从事科学研究感兴趣,如果你积极主动、虚心向学,我觉得你可以考虑读博士研究生,因为这是接受系统性科研训练的最好方式。如果你在出国还是留在国内读博之间犹豫不决,我想告诉你,在系统与控制学科领域,智网中心提供了第三种选择,能让中国的优秀学生在国内接受国际一流的科研训练。我相信,如果你被智网中心录取,在这里度过的时光有一天也会成为你的美好回忆。

2. 求学期的一点感想

前些天收到 CFINS 中心贾庆山老师的来信,提到何老师想让我们几位毕业生谈谈自己在中心求学期间的一些感受,作为中心的毕业生,我自然是非常愿意整理一下自己这五年的一些感受,所以就欣然应允了。

作为中心招收的第一批学生之一,我对中心的老师和同学们在我求学期间的帮助非常感激。我的导师曹希仁教授和中心其他老师们对我的言传身教,让我度过了人生中十分重要的一个五年,现在回忆起来,我觉得可以说自己是无悔于直博期间的五年时间的。也正是在中心这五年的科研培训,使得我能够算是初步跨入科研工作的门槛,对做真正科研工作有一个十分粗浅的尝试。树立一个正确的做科研工作的方式,是我们年轻人从事科研工作时需要做好的一个非常重要的准备工作。我这里说的“正确的做科研工作的方式”主要是指做研究时需要遵守的一些基本行为准则,是一个涉及做研究的态度问题。何教授等中心的老师在学生们刚进入中心的时候就会给我们讲授做科研时需要遵守的基本道德准则,并且在以后的指导期间要求学生严格遵守。这些学术道德准则可能在一些人看来是基本常识,但是不可否认的是国内还是有很多违反这些学术道德的事件发生,关于这些事情发生的深层次原因何老师在他之前的博文中已经分析过了,其实我觉得这可能也是中心老师们为什么对学生这么着重强调这些准则的原因之一,这不但能够让学生们能够树立起良好的学术道德观,而且也能够增强科研工作在学生心中的神圣感。在我毕业之后的工作期间中,有时也遇到过周边一些与我观念中的学术道德不太符合的事情,我对此也迷茫和痛苦过,不过我想我会恪守这些学术道德的底线。

关于选择在国内还是国外攻读博士的问题,何老师在他的一篇博文里面已经做了全面的分析。除了没有移民的便利以及国内现在对洋博士的推崇之外,我觉得中心在其他方面与国外大学的差距已经不大了。此外近年来国家出台了资助国内博士生公费去国外大学交流研究的项目,中心基本上每位博士生都能够去国外名校做半年到一年左右的交流,这能够比较好地弥补国内学生对英文文化切身理解的缺憾。所以整体来看,我觉得在中心读博不失为一个良好的选择。回想这几年在中心读博的感受,以及与其他研究机构的对比,我觉得中心的一个非常重要的方面就是能够提供一个良好的科研氛围。在给学生们贯彻了一个正确的学术道德观之后,老师自身的道德操守和学术成就无疑就是学生们效仿的标准。俗话说言传身教,老师与学生之间的关系在某种意义上类似于家庭中父母与子女之间的关系,严师出高徒、虎父无犬子就体现了言传身教的作用。中心的教授们人格魅力的影响、在学术上面的成就,很好的引导了学生们朝着正确的方向努力。“为人师表”的“表”字本来是表率的意思,但我还想把它理解为表面的意思,如果老师在一些表面和基本的事情上都不能做好的话,那就很难对学生能够起到正面的作用了。在社会中后来我也观察到了确实存在有不少学生的作风类似于老师的情况,无论是好的例子还是坏的例子都有,这是因为一个人在某个氛围里面长时间耳濡目染之后做事情自然会带有类似的风格。另外一方面,我觉得中心在学术研究上面的态度是认真和严肃的,中心形成了一个比较好的学术研究氛围,学生们大部分工作都是在朝着做学术研究的方向努力。我在中心五年的时间里,中心所承担的横向项目比较少,即便有一些对外合作项目,也都是研究性质的项目。学生们在里面做的不是大量的技术性工作,而是尝试用更好的创新的方法来解决其中的问题,这也是与何教授所倡导的从实际工程中做科研的风格相一致。我在学期间仅参与过一个横向项目,在这个项目工作的基础上有多位同学发表了高质量的国际期刊论文,此外还给一位同学提供了博士论文的基础。我想正是这些良好的科研氛围和无形的影响力,使得学生们能够得以在做学术研究的道路上有所前进。

在中心求学期间的感受很多,上面只是挑选其中我觉得比较重要的方面谈谈,希望能够对读者有所帮助。另外希望提及的是,非常感谢何教授能够把他的一些思想写成博文供我们阅读,读何老师的一些文章就觉得是自己在思想和哲学上的一次营养大餐。以前没有机会面谢,这次借这个机会向何老师致谢。

3. 回顾cfins的博士生生涯

从大四做毕业设计开始,在cfins呆了有将近6年。从最初对cfins的膜拜,到今天恋恋不舍的离开,这些年在这里的学习和生活会是我宝贵的财富。

6 年前,选择到刚成立不久的cfins读直博,更多是冲着讲席教授组的几位大师来的。而和几位师兄师姐的交流更坚定了我的想法,因为和其他研究生相比,他们国际交流、参与重要项目、学习领域前沿知识的机会更多。

刚进入cfins,我也参与到一个国际合作项目中,负责一个调度算法的实现。第一年上了很多由讲席教授开设的课程,印象最深的是何老师和赵老师合讲的一门课。之所以印象深刻,是因为上课的形式非常特别:课堂上没有讲课,只有提问和回答。上这门课的同学都要求在上课之前就自学课程,上课一开始就直接由老师提问,而同学从问答中进一步了解自己学习的深度和不足,进一步深入的理解知识。这种上课的形式非常特殊,和其他课程都不同,那个学期我感觉自己每周都在为这门课作准备,为适应这种方式花费了很多时间。现在回过头来看,这门课是我学的最扎实的,因为在上课之后我就相当于学习理解了两遍,因此对课程涉及到的知识我印象很深刻。譬如序优化,虽然我博士生的研究工作没有涉及,但是对其中的一些细节我依然记得很清楚。而普通的课程,期末考试之后就开始遗忘,如果不使用那么到现在我可能只记得课程的名字了。

这种特殊的传授知识的方式是我进入cfins首先感受到的不同。其他的不同还有很多。譬如cfins的学生交流的机会很多。刚到cfins的不久的时候,就有个师兄去了香港,一个师姐去了美国短期交流。我在cfins的五年中,有一年多是在香港科技大学度过的。这一年多当中,我认识了一些国内外研究学者,和他们有合作交流,对开阔自己的学术眼界,提高学术能力非常有帮助。而到cfins访问的教授也有许多大师级的人物,倾听他们的报告,和他们交流让我受益匪浅。

我的导师是香港科技大学的教授,也是清华cfins的讲席教授组成员之一。他给了非常多的指导。我在清华期间,主要是通过邮件的方式和他进行讨论,提出自己的问题或者想法,他会给出意见。这些意见往往非常精辟,一针见血,直接指出问题的关键所在。在他的指导下,进步很快,也做出了一些研究的结果。

我也有一些本科或者研究生同学,在清华本科或者硕士毕业后出国攻读博士学位的。在香港科技大学,也接触了很多科大的博士生。他们和我最大的差别,或许在于清华论文数量的要求。清华有论文数量要求,4篇核心。而国外博士生往往有一篇高质量的论文就合格了,甚至都不一定需要正式发表。论文的质量评判主要依赖于导师。国外的博士生总是将稿件投到高质量的期刊,而国内学生,包括我,由于数量的要求,不得不投稍差一些的期刊,以增加命中率。毕竟5年中有4篇文章发表的要求不是那么容易满足的,因为高质量期刊的审稿时间往往非常长。这是件很无奈的事情,但作为学校的规定是不得不遵守的。那么对应的,你需要花一些精力做一些小的问题,得到一些小的结果,然后写一些小的文章投出去。

另一个差别在于生活。我在科技大学的时候,生活变得非常简单:吃饭睡觉想问题。当时有一个问题一直无法解决,需要寻找一些随机过程方面的资料。问过一些老师,因为问题比较偏,所以没有得到答案。香港科大的图书馆非常好,有两架子随机过程和最优控制相关的书。我用了一个星期,几乎所有时间都在图书馆翻这两架子书,一本一本的找,终于在一本1981年的书中找到了我需要的一个结果,由此也做出了博士生期间最主要的研究结果。而在清华大学,杂事会很多,会有很多紧急但是不重要的事情让你做。相信每一个清华的研究生都会有这样的感觉。而在外面的生活会简单到无聊的程度。但研究工作本来就需要静下心来进行,因此简单的生活,对研究来说是一个促进。如果当时我是在清华,那恐怕很难连续一周泡在图书馆一本书一本书查找需要的一个结果。相信在国外的博士生生活也会比较简单,不会像在清华这样丰富多彩。但简单的生活对研究或许有更多的帮助。

今天我已经离开这个生活了6年的地方,不过和实验室的老师同学们还有很多的联系,经常聚在一起聊当年的生活和未来的发展。我在cfins的经历和所学到的知识、能力,会一直给我帮助。

4. 我眼中的CFINS

我从2003年进入智能与网络化系统中心(Center For Intelligent and Networked System,简称CFINS)读研,到今年顺利拿到博士学位毕业,一共在CFINS度过了5年的时光。在这里,我收获了导师何毓琦先生春风化雨般的精心指导,副导师陈曦老师在科研上的耐心教诲和生活上的热心关怀,以及整个CFINS大家庭包括海外学者在内的支持、鼓励和帮助。回首这5年的经历,我认为CFINS无疑是一个能够和Harvard、MIT、Stanford、UC. Berkeley等一流大学的一流学术团队相比肩的集体。

CFINS是个大师云集的地方。自不必说以何毓琦先生为首席科学家的讲席教授组的每一位成员都是各自领域的泰山北斗,也不必说CFINS的本地教师都是自动化系教师队伍中的青年才俊,单是每个学期受CFINS邀请前来访问讲学的海外知名学者就足以令每个学生受益匪浅。

在2003年刚刚进入CFINS的时候,我就曾有幸接待过IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control 的主编C.G. Cassandras,在和Cassandras的日常接触中,讨论过很多问题,学到了很多东西。实际上,控制、优化和网络领域各大顶级杂志的主编几乎都到访过CFINS,有的还来过不止一次。

CFINS不仅将海外知名学者请进来,也让自己的学生走出去。我曾得到中心的支持,参加过3次国际会议(其中部分费用来自清华大学信息学院邓锋基金的支持,在此一并表示感谢),每次国际会议,都能结识一大批相关领域的顶级学者。更有不少同学得到了去国际一流大学访问交流、从事数月到一年的科学研究的机会。

正是和包括讲席教授组在内的这些学术大师的频繁接触和深入交流,使每个CFINS学生了解了大师们的学术思维,具有了国际化的学术视野。

当然,学术大师的指导只是一方面,还需要结合具有重要意义的研究课题,才能诞生有价值的科研成果。CFINS与UTC、通用汽车等公司的国际合作项目,为不少同学提供了国际前沿的、具有重要价值的研究课题。除此之外,CFINS还鼓励和支持学生根据个人兴趣选择国际前沿课题。我的博士研究方向是无线传感器网络,早在2003年的时候,包括我在内的几个老师和同学就对这个国际前沿热点领域产生了兴趣,但当时没有项目的支持。尽管如此,CFINS中心主任管晓宏教授还是拿出自己的科研经费购置了一批价格不菲的传感器节点,供我们做实验用。这种兴趣驱动的科研氛围,激励了原始性的创新,也提高了CFINS的影响力。

记得刚上大学的时候,就听一位老师在谈到对出国留学的看法时说,如果你能申请到国外一流大学的一流导师,那我非常支持你出国留学;如果你只是申请到二流大学的二流导师,那我建议你还是不要出去了。至今我非常同意这个观点。环境对一个人的影响是巨大的,特别是对于打算读博士的学生,要在一个实验室学习和工作四、五年甚至更长的时间,更应该选择顶级的导师和一流的科研环境。CFINS无疑是非常理想的选择。

5. 那些伴我成长的日子

在CFINS,我度过了四年多的时间,那些伴我成长的日子中,有太多难忘的回忆,应庆山之邀写一点自己在CFINS的生活,这些点滴,都将是我生命中的珍藏。

很幸运的,在直博第一年快结束的时候,我搬到了506。记得那时屋子还很空,挺干净,东面的墙上挂着三面旗,让这里显得有点特别。一位女同学热情的帮我拿东西,我挑了一个靠暖气的座位,我对那厚重的铁桌子很好奇,就这样,开始了我的CFINS生活。

浓郁的学术讨论氛围,是CFINS给我的第一印象。刚到那里时,我还没有确定研究方向,经过了第一年的课程学习,我甚至觉得博士生活有些沉闷。看书、看论文,似乎仅此而已。而506似乎不一样,那时,靠东边的三个人经常讨论一些学术问题,很专注、有时面红耳赤、有时还用英语,有时和老师的讨论也很热烈。我很被这种活跃所吸引,看似呆板的学术问题,在投入的思考、较真的争论之后,就从模糊变得清晰起来,从纸面上跃了出来,有了知识的魅力。慢慢的,我也融入了这种讨论,喜欢上了这样的讨论,并且学着该如何讨论。即使现在毕业了,我也习惯性的拿着问题去找人讨论,还总结了两点:1、要有明确的讨论内容,漫无目的的讨论只是浪费时间。2、把讨论内容写到纸上,在讨论之前让她尽可能丰满,学术的原创性总是很敏感的,别因为讨论给自己造成损失。

前沿的课题,名师的指引,激发科研的兴趣。刚进CFINS时,还没有科研的感觉,有时看到书上较完备的定理推导,心中还在忐忑,我能做出类似的结果么?有时一个方向的论文啃了好多篇,也没有理出头绪。而在开始做课题之后事情慢慢的改变。实验室开始了和UTRC的项目合作,研究复杂制造系统的优化。整个系统的仿真模型,几百个工厂组成的复杂的制造链展现在眼前,还可以看见某一个工件的加工过程。研究系统的优化,仿佛自己就是这个复杂系统的决策者,兴趣也由之而来。而科研却没这么简单,自己还是找不到突破点。而那时赵老师经常来实验室里,他的思路总是那么清晰和活跃,有时还从编码上和算法上来指导,有时直到很晚。终于在项目一期结束的时候,我有了至少让自己很高兴的成果,将几十个车间的petri网模型压缩到14个。虽然不是很值得称道的结果,但兴趣确是这样慢慢的培养起来的。四年多里,这样的例子还有很多。我记得很深刻的是郑老师说“做你感兴趣的事情、自然干劲很足”。兴趣让我们努力去取得成果,成果会激发我们的兴趣,这是一个正反馈。现在的工作中,我也不断的去发掘自己的兴趣,让自己充满激情。Imagination, never lose your passion.

在CFINS的环境中成长,对我的塑造,我很感激。每个人都是复杂的,多面性的,我也一样。本科毕业时的自己似乎有些木讷、低调、不够自信,活力和激情只是在心里。来到CFINS这个环境中,这里的自信的、活跃的气氛感染着我,塑造了我。何老师课堂上对主动发言的督促、大家课后的较真讨论、老师的悉心指导和鼓励、每两周组内学术报告、自发的学术兴趣小组、从组织博士生论坛到组织大型学术会议、实验室的试验平台搭建,顶着烈日在操场上实验、创新基金的申请、以及体育比赛中的全力以赴,等等,等等。四年多的生活中,低调和不自信在不知不觉中退后了,活力和热情走到了前面。在这个过程中,记得不止一次别人说我变了,对这种改变我很感激。在走过了博士生活这个成长阶段后,这种改变保持了下来,现在我感觉自己总是充满热情的。

那些伴我成长的日子里,有太多太多的事情值得我回忆。那段日子是充实的、美好的、值得感激的。

6. 五年小结

当回忆过去的时候,总会发现时间过得很快,我在CFINS的五年也是如此。记得何老师谈人生规划的时候说,生活的不确定性太多,我们能预料和计划的大约就是五年。五年前,我的计划是能够获得博士学位,做出令自己满意的研究成果。现在看,这个计划实现了75%的样子。

还记得02年10月的一天,我在赵千川老师的办公室,告诉他我想读陆宝森老师的博士生。他说,你要想清楚,陆老师对学生是非常严的。赵老师说的是实情,其实不止陆老师,中心的讲席教授每个人都个性鲜明,对学生的要求都很严格,只是形式不同而已。不过这种严格主要体现在课题研究中,在生活中,老师们平易近人,和我们海阔天空的谈理想、谈生活、谈人生。

面对困难和压力时的信心;严谨思考努力工作的态度;遇到问题独立学习求解的方法是我在CFINS做学生这五年最突出的体会。

当初和陆老师联系做他的学生时,陆老师要求我能做到自我激励与努力工作。和其他博士毕业的同学交流,不论是清华的同学还是工作中的同事。大家都觉得读博士是一件很辛苦的事情,需要“耐得住寂寞”。幸运的是,在读博士的这几年,我认识了很好的朋友,发展了自己很喜欢的体育运动。记得赵老师在一次讲座中告诉我们,要有一颗饱含爱的心,爱自己的工作,爱周围的人;当遇到困难时,家人、朋友、老师的爱,是我们的力量。这番话也一直被我记住。其实读博士的困难,是一种意志和信心的锻炼:博士都毕业了,还怕什么前进路上的困难?

陆老师很注意培养学生的国际化视野,和我们讨论学术问题时都是使用英文。这和何老师对CFINS的期望“在学术界闻名”是一致的。他要求学生做任何事情都要用心,做得“专业”。小到做幻灯片、写论文的标点陆老师都会予以指导。有一次我写的报告不太仔细,陆老师说,如果你做,就要做好。我的导师陆老师和赵老师平时工作都非常的努力,这也极大的影响了他们所有的学生。由于时差的原因,陆老师和我们讨论的时间是美国的晚上,他把和我们每周的讨论当作自己的责任。

学习能力也是读博士期间自己觉得很受锻炼的一种能力。发现问题、解决问题,不论是在学校做研究还是在公司工作都是如此。研究的过程,就是做深度和广度搜索的过程。当你在研究的方向上不断细化时,就发现整个学术界做相关研究的仅有很少的几个人。这时候,需要自己去学习和探索。就像赵老师说的,要有一种创新的勇气,如果第一二年还只是跟随的话,那么后几年就应该像鹰一样独立飞翔了。博士培养的目标是要能独挡一面,承担一个课题或者项目。

才智、努力、机遇;三者会决定读博几年所获得的成绩的大小。机遇往往可遇不可求,我们能做的,就是努力把能控的部分做好。回想过去在CFINS的5年,我不为自己当初的选择后悔。心理、态度、能力这些是受用一生的财富,我感谢CFINS的诸位老师和同学。

[2008.8] IEEE CASE 2008 会议

IEEE CASE 2008 于 8 月 22 - 26 日举行于美国华盛顿(哥伦比亚特区)。我中心管晓宏教授陆宝森教授赵千川教授和我中心研究生赵燕佳、李明扬参加了此次会议。

管晓宏教授邀请,Pieter J. Mosterman 博士于 2008 年 6 月 23 日访问我中心。Mosterman 博士是 MathWorks 公司高级科学家,计算机领域的专家。23 日上午 10:00,Mosterman 博士在 FIT 大楼 1-315 房间做了名为《Model-Based Design - An overview and research》的学术报告。报告由我中心主任管晓宏教授主持,报告后 Mosterman 博士和管晓宏教授赵千川教授贾庆山讲师,以及同时来中心访问的波士顿大学 Christos G. Cassandras 教授进行了深入讨论。

摘要: Model-Based Design - An overview and research

Model-Based Design is increasingly adopted in industry. This has resulted in a need for supporting an enterprise-wide use of models. As such, it has to be dealt with computational models that are designed in many different formalisms, that have very different computational semantics, and that capture the same parts at very different levels of detail or in different stages of design. A Computer Automated Multiparadigm Modeling (CAMPaM) framework is outlined that can be used to support and facilitate Model-Based Design. In addition to recent CAMPaM research, hybrid dynamic systems are presented as a mathematical framework for execution. Paradigmatic and pathological behaviors are illustrated by means of a multiple phase space transition ontology.

简历

Pieter J. Mosterman is a senior research scientist at The MathWorks, Inc. in Natick, MA. Before, he was a research associate at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen. He has a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Twente, Netherlands. His primary research interests are in Computer Automated Multiparadigm Modeling (CAMPAM). He designed the Electronics Laboratory Simulator, nominated for The Computerworld Smithsonian Award by Microsoft Corporation. He was awared the IMechE Donald Julius Groen Prize for a paper on HYBRSIM, a hybrid bond graph modeling and simulation environment. Dr. Mosterman is currently Editor-in-Chief of SIMULATION: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International for the Methodology section, and Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology and of Applied Intelligence. He was Guest Editor of special issues of SIMULATION, ACM Transactions on Modeling and Computer Simulation and IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology on the topic of CAMPAM.

[2008.5.26] 哈佛大学的Roger W. Brockett教授来我中心作学术报告

5 月 26 日上午 10:30,来自哈佛大学的 Roger W. Brockett 教授在 FIT 大楼的 1-515 房间,作了题为《Optimal Control of Observable Continuous Time Markov Chains》的学术报告,报告由我中心主任管晓宏教授主持。在中心访问的 Meerkov 教授、李京山教授,和张亮博士,以及中心的多名老师和学生参加了报告。报告引起了大家浓厚的兴趣,听众与 Brockett 教授进行了广泛和深入的讨论。报告的摘要如下:

We consider the optimal control of time varying, finite horizon, continuous time Markov chains. We assume perfect observability and that the Markov chains are controllable through the adjustment of the transition rates, subject to a quadratic penalty on the amount of the rate adjustment. We derive an ordinary differential equation whose solution gives the minimum return function for a wide class of such systems and show how the optimal feedback control law depends on the minimum return function. The results bear some resemblance to the solution of the quadratic regulator problem for linear systems, but because of the bilinear structure the stochastic equation, the details are quite different.

5 月 27 日上午 9:00,Brockett 教授在 FIT 大楼的 1-315 房间作了题为《Noise Models for Quantum Systems and Controlling for Minimal Decoherence》的学术报告,报告由我中心袁睿翕教授主持。自动化系李春文教授及其量子控制课题组、我中心师生,以及来自我校其它院系和中科院的学生参加了这次报告,并在报告结束后和 Brockett 教授进行了热烈的学术讨论。报告的摘要如下:

Quantum mechanical models for systems with spin are among the simpler Quantum systems to study. Take into account the “heat bath”, the evaluation of the systems is governed by $$ \dot{\rho } =- [A+uB,\rho ] + [R\eta (t), \rho] $$, where $\rho $ is a Hermitean density matrix, $u$ is a scalar control function representing the effect of a externally applied radio frequency field and the stochastic term $\eta $ representing the heat bath dynamics. If $\eta $ is approximated by white noise of variance $k$ then the expected value of $\rho $ satisfies $$\mathcal E \dot{\rho } = [A+uB, \mathcal E \rho ] +k [R,[R,\rho ]]$$. These considerations help shape a relevant control problem in the following way. When an NMR experiment is designed for spectroscopic purposes then one is interested in the eigenvalues of $A=-A^*$. When $u$ is set to zero the response with $k=0$ is purely oscillatory and the Fourier transform of the signal it radiates serves to identify its eigenvalues. On the other hand, the effect of $R$ is to introduce damping, in this context called decoherance, making the spectrum of the observed signal harder to measure accurately. In this talk we will attempt to explain this background and present some newer results on the control theoretic description of decoherance free trajectories.

Roger W. Brockett 教授简历

Roger Brockett received his B.S. in 1960, his M.S. in 1962, and his Ph.D. in 1964, all from Case Western Reserve University. Roger Brocket joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963 as an assistant professor and Ford Foundation Fellow, working in automatic control. In 1969 he was appointed Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Division of Applied Sciences at Harvard, where he became An Wang Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 1989.

Dr. Brockett has held visiting positions at a number of universities. He has also held a variety of consulting positions from 1965 to the present. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Brockett has been involved in the professional activities of IEEE, SIAM, AMS and Tau Beta Pi, having served on the advisory committees and editorial boards for several groups in these societies, including IEEE's Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation, and Systems and Control Letters.

Dr. Brockett owns three patents and published four books. In 1965, he received the Best Joint Automatic Control Conference Paper Award, and he was the Recipient of the American Automatic Control Council's 1967 Donald P. Eckman Award for Contributions to the Field of Automatic Control. In 1989, he received the American Automatic Control Council's Richard E. Bellman Award, and in 1991, he received the IEEE Control Systems and Engineering Field Award. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1991. In 1996 he received SIAM's Reid Prize for his work in differential equations and control, and he received the ASME Oldenberger Award in 2005

Quantifying Heuristics in the Ordinal Optimization Framework

Design problems in real world are generally difficult to solve optimally. They are complex in many aspects. Difficulties in evaluating performance for given designs and large search space are two obstacles. People have to search for good enough solutions which are believed much easier to find. This is the main idea of soft computing. Various heuristics are introduced to implement soft computing for hard problems. The question is, are the heuristic design(s) good enough? In recent years, Ordinal Optimization (OO) has emerged as one of such techniques in the optimization of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems (DEDS). Comparing with many other soft computing tools, one important feature of OO is that the quality of solutions obtained by OO is quantified. In this paper, following the OO idea, by comparing the heuristic designs with the set of uniformly sampled designs we measure the ordinal quality of heuristic design(s). Mathematically, Hypothesis Testing (HT) is employed to establish criteria to quantify whether the heuristic designs are good enough or not, and the Type II error is bounded within a confidence level.

“何潘清漪优秀论文奖”是美国哈佛大学何毓琦教授(Yu-Chi Ho)为了庆贺其母亲何潘清漪老太太九十岁生日设立的,借以纪念她的母爱,以及她为了支持何先生的事业所付的辛劳。

授奖对象

2006-2007 年度(以论文实际发表日期为准)离散事件动态系统(Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, DEDS)领域优秀论文的作者,要求第一作者为中国大陆学者。

目的

选拔、奖励、促进和宣传中国学者在 DEDS 领域内得到的为国际承认的重大成果。

条例与机构

  1. 从 1991 年起至今,“何潘清漪优秀论文奖”已经颁发六届。奖金共计 6000 美元。每届奖金 1000 美元。若获奖论文有多位作者,则共享奖金。何毓琦教授愿意继续提供奖金。因此“何潘清漪优秀论文奖”将继续颁发。
  2. 第一作者为中国大陆作者,2006-2007 年度正式发表在国内外刊物或学术会议上的关于 DEDS 领域的论文都有资格申请奖金,论文发表语言不限。

世界科技出版公司即将宣布一项系统工程和应用数学新书出版计划。目前该系列图书的编委会已经形成。我们智网中心的首席科学家何毓琦教授应邀出任主编,美国 George Mason 大学的陈俊宏(音)教授新加坡国立大学李裕火博士和智网中心的赵千川教授应邀担任编辑。该系列图书的目标是及时出版系统工程,工业工程和运筹学研究方面的高水平的系统性研究成果或教材。详细的介绍将很快公布。

[2007.12.19] 贾庆山博士获得教育部高等学校博士学科点专项科研基金支持

2007 年度高等学校博士学科点专项科研基金课题评审工作结束,国家教育部于日前公布了今年获得批准的项目(http://www.cutech.edu.cn/cn/zxgz/2007/12/1194500969181032.htm)。贾庆山讲师的课题“描述复杂性约束下大规模再制造系统维护策略序优化”获得博士点基金新教师基金资助(项目号 20070003110)。该项目从 2008 年 1 月开始至 2010 年 12 月,为期三年。

乔治·大卫先生是美国联合技术公司董事长兼首席执行官,今天在中央主楼接待厅做了题为“21世纪的社会可持续发展”的演讲。这是“清华海外名师讲堂”第十讲。我中心主任管晓宏教授主持了大卫先生的演讲。来自自动化系、建筑系和公共安全研究所的一百多名师生参加了此次活动。演讲后,大卫先生就可持续发展问题与听众进行了亲切交流。大卫先生的简历和美国联合技术公司简介如下。

乔治·大卫 联合技术公司 董事长兼首席执行官

乔治·大卫现任联合技术公司(UTC)董事长兼首席执行官。他分别于1992年和1994年被选为UTC总裁和首席执行官。乔治·大卫1975年加盟UTC的子公司奥的斯电梯公司,1986年成为奥的斯公司总裁。

乔治·大卫获得哈佛大学学士学位和弗吉尼亚大学工商管理硕士学位。他是花旗银行董事会董事、商业委员会和商业圆桌会议委员以及皮特森国际经济研究所副所长。此外他还在弗吉尼亚大学研究生商学院董事会、全国少数民族供应商发展委员会、美国东盟商业委员会、跨大西洋商业对话以及沃兹沃斯-雅典庙宇美术博物馆等组织中担任领导职务。

[2007.11.16] Michael Fu 教授当选 IEEE 会士

电气电子工程师协会 (IEEE) 的一项重要宗旨是认可会员的杰出成就。每年,IEEE 会士委员会遵循严格的程序评选出一组取得杰出成就的会员,给他们颁发 IEEE 会士资格,这是 IEEE 的最高荣誉之一。

Smith 商学院的管理学教授,同时兼任系统研究所、电子与计算机工程系的教职。自 2004 年以来,他多次访问我中心,讲授仿真优化方面的知识与研究动态,与中心师生进行合作研究。同时作为海外成员他参加了智网中心自 2006 年开始的 111 引智计划。Michael Fu 早年毕业于麻省理工学院数学系、电子工程与计算机科学系,并从 哈佛大学 获得应用数学博士学位。他的研究兴趣包括仿真优化、应用概率论,以及在供应链管理、金融工程方面的应用。他在马里兰大学讲授应用概率论、随机过程、仿真、计算金融学、供应链的运作与管理等多门课程,于 1995 年获得马里兰大学商学院办法的 Allen J. Krowe 优秀教学奖。2004 - 2005 年,他获得马里兰大学杰出学者教师荣誉称号。Fu 教授已出版了四本专著《条件蒙特卡罗:梯度估计与优化应用》(与 J.Q. Hu 合著),此书于 1998 年获得 运筹学与管理学学会 (INFORMS) 仿真学会杰出出版物奖;《马氏决策过程基于仿真的算法》(与 H.S. Chang、J. Hu、S.I. Marcus 合著);《运筹学展望》(与 F.B. Alt 和 B.L. Golden 合编);《数学金融学前沿》(与 R.A. Jarrow、J.-Y. Yen、R.J. 11 月 14 日上午 9:00,Pravin Varaiya 教授在 FIT 大楼的 1-415 房间,做了名为《Wireless sensor networks for measuring traffic》的学术报告。Pravin Varaiya 教授 是加州大学伯克利分校电机工程和计算机科学系的北电网络杰出教授。1975 至 1992 年间,他还担任伯克利大学经济学教授。他的研究兴趣包括通信网络、交通、和混合系统。Pravin Varaiya 教授 曾获得了古根海姆奖学金和米勒研究教授职位。他获得法国图卢兹国立综合理工学院和格勒诺布尔国立综合理工学院的荣誉博士学位及美国电子电气研究学会最佳论文奖和最高荣誉奖。他是 电气电子工程师协会 (IEEE) 的成员,是美国工程院院士和美国艺术与科学院院士。他是《离散事件动态系统》、《交通研究——C》等期刊编辑,合作发表了三本学术专著和三百多篇学术论文,其中《高性能通信网络》(与 Jean Walrand 合著)一书第二版于 2000 年由 Morgan-Kaufmann 出版社出版,《信号与系统的结构与解释》(与 Edward Lee 合著)一书于 2003 年由 Addison-Wesley 出版社出版。

报告由我中心主任管晓宏教授主持。我中心和智能交通系统联合实验室的师生,以及其他学生共二十余人参加了这次报告。报告的摘要如下:

Wireless magnetic sensor networks offer an attractive, low-cost alternative to inductive loops, video, and radar for traffic measurement. The network comprises sensor nodes glued to the pavement where vehicles are to be detected. The nodes send their data via radio to the “access point” or AP on the side of the road. The AP forwards sensor data to the Traffic Management Center via GPRS or to the signal controller.
Vehicles are detected by measuring the change in the Earth's magnetic field caused by the presence of a vehicle near the sensor. Two sensors placed apart a few feet measure speed. A vehicle's magnetic “signature” can be processed to classify the vehicle type. Measurements from an array of nodes provide a “fingerprint” that can be used to re-identify vehicles. The talk will present experimental results.
The key engineering challenge is to reduce power consumption so that the nodes can last in the pavement for 10 years under battery power and can withstand the impact of heavy trucks.

10月8日晚,自动化系于何毓琦讲席教授组、智能与网络化系统研究中心(CFINS)成立六周年之际,在紫光国际交流中心召开了以“根植清华,耕耘六载”为主题的金秋联谊会。来自中科院数学与系统科学研究院、中科院自动化研究所、北京大学工学院和清华大学的共约四十名领导、嘉宾出席了此次活动。会议由自动化系党委书记张佐研究员主持。智能与网络化系统研究中心主任管晓宏教授作了CFINS中心六年工作简要报告。他谈到,六年来,中心坚持以人为本,把建设优秀教师队伍和培养高水平研究生放在首位,取得了突出的成就,研究生系列课程建设获得学校教学成果奖,在中心年青教授协助指导下的一名博士获得全国优秀博士论文;以智能与网络化系统研究为核心开展学科建设,团结系内教师并从国外引进“百人计划”等高层次人才,在资源优化配置与综合开发利用、大规模网络主动防御系统、传感器网络、建筑系统优化节能、安全监控和应急响应等方向获得国家自然科学基金重点项目、863计划目标导向(重点)课题、美国联合技术公司研究院(UTRC)等资助,科学研究和国际合作取得重要进展,有效地提高了中心和自动化系的国际学术声誉;讲席教授组还积极为国家科技发展、建设世界一流大学和自动化学科建设出谋划策。

上午 10:00 - 11:30,我中心访问教授 Michael Fu 教授 在 FIT 楼 1-415 会议室做了题为《Model-Based Randomized Methods for Global Optimization》的学术报告。报告由赵千川教授主持。有 6 位老师和 15 位同学参加了这次学术报告参加,其中包括我中心讲席教授陆宝森教授曹希仁教授。该报告引起了大家浓厚的兴趣,听众与 Michael Fu 教授 进行了广泛和深入的讨论。报告的摘要如下:

We survey some randomized search methods for global optimization that are based on sampling from an underlying probability distribution “model” on the solution space. In this approach, the probability model is updated iteratively after evaluating the performance of the samples at each iteration. Such model-based methods include estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs), the cross-entropy (CE) method, and the recently proposed model reference adaptive search (MRAS). This is based on joint work with Jiaqiao Hu and Steve Marcus.

Michael Fu 教授

Michael C. Fu is Tyser Professor of Management Science in the Robert H. Smith School of Business, with a joint appointment in the Institute for Systems Research and affiliate faculty appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, all at the University of Maryland. He received degrees in mathematics and EE/CS from 麻省理工学院, and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from 哈佛大学. His research interests include simulation optimization and applied probability, with applications in supply chain management and financial engineering. He teaches courses in applied probability, stochastic processes, simulation, computational finance, and supply chain/operations management, and in 1995 was awarded the Maryland Business School's Allen J. Krowe Award for Teaching Excellence. He was named a University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher for 2004--2005. He has published four books: 《Conditional Monte Carlo: Gradient Estimation and Optimization Applications》 (co-author J.Q. 6 月 15 日下午 2:30 - 4:30,我中心讲席教授组成员陆宝森教授在 FIT 楼 1 区 315 做了题为《Coherent Modeling and Effective Coordination for Building Emergency Evacuation》的学术报告。报告由我中心副主任赵千川教授主持。来自我系及其他院系的总共十多名师生参加了这次学术报告,并就相关学术问题与陆宝森教授进行了交流。报告的摘要如下:

For emergency evacuation, building systems need to operate in a coordinated and timely fashion. For instance, the guidance of people to safely evacuate from a building via its egress paths must be accompanied by properly pressurizing certain areas with fresh air through HVAC airflow control while sealing off unsafe areas. However, most of current egress and HVAC systems are modeled and controlled separately with little or no attention to such interdependencies. This paper presents coherent modeling and effective coordination for building emergency evacuation. To coordinate the two systems without sharing detailed information, our key idea is to let each have a local representation of the global problem by aggregating its own detail model and sending the aggregate model to the other. For model aggregation, an approach is developed based on wavelet transformations that systematically and coherently link states and decisions across different scales and over distinct time periods. With the other's aggregate model, each system solves its own problem by using dynamic programming within the surrogate optimization framework. A heuristics is then developed to coordinate the two systems for a feasible solution. The novelty of our approach lies in coherent transformations of states, decisions, and multipliers across different scales for systems with discrete variables. Numerical results demonstrate that solutions obtained from multiscale models are consistent, and effective coordination is achieved based on aggregate models.

6 月 4 日下午 2:30 - 4:00,我中心讲席教授组成员陆宝森教授在中央主楼 511 会议室做了题为《Optimal Auctions for Deregulated Electricity Market》的学术报告。报告由我中心主任管晓宏教授主持。来自我系及电机系等其他院系的总共二十多名师生参加了这次学术报告,并就相关学术问题与陆宝森教授进行了交流。报告的摘要如下:

In deregulated electricity markets, auction mechanisms are used to select supply bids for energy and ancillary services. Currently, most Independent System Operators in the US use a “bid cost minimization” auction mechanism that minimizes total supply bid costs to select bids, and afterwards settle the market based on market-clearing prices. Consequently, the consumer payments could be significantly higher than the minimized bid cost from the auction. This gives rise to “payment cost minimization”, an alternative auction mechanism that directly minimizes consumer payments. A review of literature shows that with the same set of supply bids, payment cost minimization leads to reduced consumer payments as compared to bid cost minimization. While methods for minimizing offer costs abound, limited approaches for minimization of payment costs have been reported. This talk presents an effective method for directly minimizing payment costs. In view of the specific features of the problem including the non-separability of its objective function, the discontinuity of offer curves, and the maximum term in defining MCPs, our key idea is to use augmented Lagrangian relaxation, and to form and solve offer and MCP subproblems by using the surrogate optimization framework. Numerical testing results demonstrate that the method is effective, and the resulting payment costs are significantly lower than what are obtained by minimizing the offer costs for a given set of offers. Additionally, strategic behaviors of suppliers are studied within the game theoretic framework for the two auction mechanisms. General matrix games are solved by using the approximate Nash concept and with our auction algorithms developed as the core. Testing results demonstrate the cost savings for consumers under payment cost minimization as compared to bid cost minimization.

In this talk we will explain the connection between the problem of localizing a network of sensors and the classical problem of deciding whether or not a structure consisting of rigid bars and flexible joints is rigid. Such structures and networks can be modeled as “point formations”. We explain why the sensors in a network in which distance information is all that is variable, can be localized if and only if the network's point formation model is globally rigid. We explain the difference between a rigid formation and a globally rigid formation and we review characterizations of both from graph theory. Finally we outline tractable algorithms for sequentially localizing certain classes of sensor networks in the plane which are provably correct in the absence of measurement errors.

Stephen Morse 教授

蒂芬·摩斯,现任美国耶鲁大学电气工程系达德利教授,兼任计算机科学系教授。 他 1962 年于康奈尔大学获本科学位;1964 年于亚利桑那大学获硕士学位;1967 年于普度大学获博士学位。1967 至 1970 年,他就职于位于美国马萨诸塞州剑桥市的美国国家航空航天局(NASA)电子研究中心控制理论与应用研究室。从 1970 年 7 月始,他在耶鲁大学从教。他的主要研究兴趣是控制系统理论,在网络集成、最优控制、多变量控制、自适应控制、城市交通协调、视觉控制以及混杂和非线性系统等领域都有颇多建树。近年来,他致力于对动物界的“群集”等现象进行数学建模和分析,并将理论结果应用到如传感器网络等大规模多自治个体的分散协调控制,所获成果获得广泛关注。

由于在几何控制理论、自适应控制理论和混杂系统稳定性理论方面的突出贡献,摩斯教授在 2002 年当选美国工程院院士。他同时还是电气电子工程师协会 (IEEE) 会士(Fellow),Sigma Xi 科学研究学会 和 Eta Kappa Nu 会员。他于 1999 年获得 IEEE 控制系统领域奖(每年一人),两次获得 IEEE 控制系统协会 George S. Axelby 最佳论文奖(2005,1993),两次获得美国自动控制理事会 (AACC)最佳论文奖,获得一次国际自动控制联合会最佳论文奖(2005)。

Ross Baldick 教授

Ross Baldick is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He received his B.Sc. and B.E. degrees from the University of Sydney, Australia and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1991-1992 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. In 1992 and 1993 he was an assistant professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Baldick has published over forty refereed journal articles and has research interests in a number of areas in electric power. His current research involves optimization and economic theory applied to electric power system operations, the public policy and technical issues associated with electric transmission under deregulation, and the robustness of the electricity system to terrorist interdiction. He has recently completed a textbook based on a graduate class, “Optimization of Engineering Systems” that he teaches in the electrical and computer engineering department at The University of Texas. He also teaches a three-day short-course “Introduction to Electric Power for Legal, Accounting, and Regulatory Professionals” and a one-day short-course “Locational Marginal Pricing” for non-technical professionals in the electricity industry. He is an editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and the chairman of the System Economics Sub-Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Power Systems Analysis, Computation, and Economics Committee. Dr. Baldick is a Fellow of the IEEE.

童朗教授 访问了我中心。今年前些时候,他曾与今年夏天访问康奈尔大学赵千川教授一同开展了传感器网络方面的研究工作。今天,他作了题为 《Wireless Networking with Secrecy Constraints》 的报告:

Wireless networks are vulnerable to intrusion and attack. Even the strongest encryption and authentication are not sufficient to protect the network. Because signals propagate in shared media, the very acts of transmission, easily detectable using simple devices, reveal crucial aspects of networking. For example, by listening the widely used RTS-CTS exchanges, an eavesdropper can guess the transmitter-receiver pair without decoding the content of the transmission. If eavesdropping sensors are geographically distributed in the network, a malicious attacker can obtain medium access control (MAC) and routing information and track messages propagating in the network, which allows him to jam the network at a crucial time or launch a denial-of-service attack.
We present in this talk two related problems. The first is the detection of information flow where we address some of the following questions: Can a route be discovered by eavesdropping sensors? What are the fundamental limits of hiding the information flow in a multihop setup? What are the effective ways of detecting information flows when they are detectable? This problem is also related to the so-called stepping-stone detection. The second problem is on defending eavesdropping via randomized scheduling. Here we are interested in the achievable network flow under secrecy constraints.

童朗教授

Lang Tong received the B.E. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, P.R. China in 1985, and PhD degree in EE from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1991. He was a Postdoctoral Research Affiliate at the Information Systems Laboratory, Stanford University in 1991.

He joined Cornell University in 1998 where he is now the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Professor in Engineering. Prior to joining Stanford University, he was on faculty at the West Virginia University and University of Connecticut. He was also the 2001 Cor Wit Visiting Professor at the Delft University of Technology.

His research is in the general areas of signal processing, communications, networking, and information theory. He is a Fellow of IEEE for his contribution to statistical signal processing for wireless communications and networking. He was the recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research, the Outstanding Young Author Award from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, the 2004 best paper award (with Min Dong) from IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the 2004 Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Communications Society (with Parvathinathan Venkitasubramaniam and Srihari Adireddy). He is also a coauthor of five student paper awards including the 2000 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Young Author Award (Qing Zhao) and Student Paper Awards in ICASSP 2005 (Ting He, Youngchul Sung) and Student Paper Awards in ICASSP 2006 (Anima Anandkumar, Parv Venkitasubramaniam).

李裕火博士,1992 年从台湾大学电机工程学系取得学士学位,1994 年和 1997 年先后从美国哈佛大学取得硕士和博士学位。自 1997 年起就职于新加坡国立大学工业和系统工程系,现任副教授,是电气电子工程师协会 (IEEE)高级会员, 新加坡运筹学会 (ORSS) 副主任, 运筹学与管理学学会 (INFORMS)会员,担任《欧洲运筹学杂志》的编委。研究方向是基于仿真的优化,生产过程的调度和排序,物流和供需链计划,以及车辆路由。

"Emerging technologies often cut across the boundaries of many of the IEEE's societies' traditional fields," says Leah Jamieson, chair of the New Technologies Directions Committee (NTDC), also under TAB, which is responsible for carrying out the initiative. "One of the key goals of the Focus on Technologies initiative is to identify opportunities for collaboration, so that the IEEE can quickly build new communities and hold workshops and conferences on emerging areas."

One of the more difficult tasks was to pick which technologies to focus on. Starting with a list of 35 fields to consider, the committee narrowed it down to six: biotechnology and bioengineering, digital intellectual property, display technologies and information interaction, distributed intelligent networks and systems, future power and alternative energy technologies, and security for public and personal safety.

As a Ph.D. student of Professor Peter B Luh, Guoyu Tu has been visited his Manufacturing Systems Laboratory in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of University of Connecticut, the United States. During her stay in the United States, she gave a presentation seminar in United Technology Research Center (UTRC) at East Hartford and had good discussion with people there. She also visited Professor Y.C. Ho (also our chief scientist in CFINS) in Harvard University.

[2005.2] Prof. Ho will retire as the editor-in-chief of JDEDS

After 15 years as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems which he founded, Professor Y.C. Ho will retire from the post and assume the title of "founding editor". Xiren Cao of USTHK, another nonresident professor of CFINS will assume the post of editor-in-chief. They expect to transfer of duties to take place gradually over 2005.

[2004.12] Prof. Y. C. Ho awarded

Prof. Y. C. Ho received the inaugural Isaacs Award from the International Society of Dynamic Games on December 21, 2004 at their bi-annual meeting for seminal contributions he made to zero-sum/nonzero-sum differential games and information structures in multiperson decision problems during the period 1965-1975.

Here is the photo taken at the bi-annual meeting of the International Society of Dynamic Games where Prof. Ho receied the inaugural Isaacs award (see CFINS news item 12/2004). In the picture with Ho are well known control scientists Tamer Basar, George Leitman, and Harold Kusher.

Qingshan Jia left Beijing to attend Santa Fe Institute Complex System Summer School (CSSS2004) at Qingdao University on July 4th.

CSSS is the flagship of SFI's educational programs. These schools are an intensive four-week introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems, intended for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Title: Fast Simulation-based Optimization for Stochastic Systems Design

ABSTRACT

Discrete-event simulation is a popular tool for designing large, complex, stochastic systems, since closed-form analytical solutions generally do not exist for such problems. While the advance of new technology has dramatically increased computational power, efficiency is still a big concern when using simulation for large system design, in which case many alternative designs must be simulated. This presentation gives our new development to address such an efficiency issue. A key component of our methodologies is a new control-theoretic simulation technique called Optimal Computing Budget Allocation (OCBA) developed by the speaker. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach via a series of network design problems. We will also present an on-going project about efficient simulation and management of the US air traffic network.

BIOGRAPHICAL

Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, in 1994. Dr. Chen is an Associate Professor of Systems Engineering & Operations Research at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. He was an Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, before joining GMU. His interests cover a wide range of areas in discrete event systems modeling and simulation, optimization, network management, and systems design under uncertainty. Sponsored by NSF, NASA, and FAA, Dr. Chen has recently worked on several critical issues, such as runway slots auction, in the analysis and management of the US air traffic network. Dr. Chen won the 1994 Harvard University Eliahu I. Jury Award for the Best Thesis in the field of Control. He is one of the recipients of the 1992 MasPar? Parallel Computer Challenge Award. Dr. Chen is an IEEE senior member and is listed in Who'sWho in America and Who'sWho in Engineering Education.

Abstract

Simulation plays a vital role in identifying the best system design from among a set of competing system designs. To improve simulation efficiency, ranking and selection techniques are often used to determine the number of simulation replications required so that a pre-specified level of correct selection is guaranteed at the least possible computational expense. As most real-life systems are multi-objective in nature, in this paper, we consider a multi-objective ranking and selection problem, where the system designs are evaluated in terms of more than one performance measures. We incorporate the concept of Pareto optimality into the ranking and selection scheme, and try to find all the non-dominated designs rather than a single “best” one. A simple sequential solution method is proposed to allocate the simulation replications. Computational results show that, the proposed algorithm is efficient in terms of total number of replications needed to find the Pareto set.

LOO HAY LEE is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, National University of Singapore, since 1997. He received his B.S (Electrical Engineering) degree from the National Taiwan University in 1992 and his S.M and PhD degrees in 1994 and 1997 from Harvard University. He is currently a senior member of IEEE, vice president of ORSS, and member of INFORMS. He is also an associate editor for Asia-Pacific journal of Operational Research. His research interests include simulation-based optimization, production scheduling and sequencing, logistics and supply chain planning, and vehicle routing.

Abstract

We discuss two algorithms for solving infinite horizon discounted reward Markov Decision Process (MDP) problems that are based on evolving a population of policies, in contrast to the usual policy iteration approach, which updates a single policy. The computational complexity of the algorithms is polynomial in the size of the state space, and is insensitive to the size of the action space; thus the algorithms should be effective for problems with large or uncountable action spaces. Convergence in a certain sense, meaning that the population contains an optimal policy, can be established under appropriate conditions. Numerical studies illustrate the algorithm and compare it with existing procedures.

Abstract

This is a sequel to Prof. Ho's 1999 plenary address at IFAC World Congress in Beijing. Starting with minimal assumptions, we explore the implications of the No Free Lunch Theorem and the engineering limits to complexity and systems. Then taking clues from the natural and human made world, we explore the possibilities and principles of distributed intelligence and control as a way to deal with complex systems. Although the talk is design to address a system audience, it should nevertheless be accessible to general science and engineering students.

Biography

Yu-Chi Ho received his S.B. and S.M. degrees in Electrical Engineering from M.I.T. and his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University. Except for three years of full time industrial work he has been on the Harvard faculty. Since 1969 he has been Gordon McKay Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics. In 1988, he was appointed to the T. Jefferson Coolidge Chair in Applied Mathematics and Gordon McKay Professor of Systems Engineering at Harvard and as visiting professor to the Cockrell Family Regent's Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin. In 2001, he retired from teaching duties at Harvard and became a Research Professor and also was appointed to be a chair professor and chief scientist (part time), at the Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems (CFINS), Tsinghua University, Beijing China.

He has published over 120 articles and four books, one of which (co-authored with A.E. Bryson, Jr.) has been translated into both Russian and Chinese and made the list of Citation Classics as one of the most referenced works on the subject of optimal control. He is on the editorial boards of several international journals and is the editor-in-chief of the international Journal on Discrete Event Dynamic Systems. He is the recipient of various fellowships and awards including the Guggenheim (1970), the IEEE Field Award for Control Engineering and Science (1989), the Chiang Technology Achievement Award (1993), The American Automatic Control Council Bellman Control Heritage Award (1999), and the ASME Rufus Oldenburger Award (1999). He is an IEEE Life Fellow and an INFORMS Inaugural Fellow (elected 2002), a Distinguished Member of the IEEE Control Systems Society, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In addition to services on various governmental and industrial panels, and professional society administrative bodies, he was the President of the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society in 1988 and co-founder of Network Dynamics, Inc., a software firm specializing in industrial automation.

His research interests ranges from differential games, information structure, multi-person decision analysis, to incentive control, and since 1983, exclusively in discrete event dynamic systems, ordinal optimization, decentralized optimization, perturbation analysis, and manufacturing automation.

Dr. Zhao was nominated and recommended by Professor Yu-Chi Ho who is our CFINS cheif scientist.

[2002.4] Students of the Center Won the First Scilab Prize

In April this year, our center's two students, Xia Li and Jia Qingshan, joined the "2002 Scilab Contest", and won the first prize.

This contest is an important contest and held by the France and China Science Academy together and its goal is to promote the application of the free software scilab.

Xia Li ,Jia Qingshan and other three students of Tsinghua University consisted a team and joined this contest. Their works is a toolbox about the simulation and analysis of Queuing Networks. At last their works got the contest committee's appreciation and won the first prize.

The Scilab is a free software to handle the science compution and it is produced by the France Science Academy. It is just like the computing software Matlab, but the Matlab is a commercial software while Scilab is a free one. Anyone who wants it can downloads it from Internet and gets its sourcecode and modify it to fit his personal requirement better.

The Agreement Signing Ceremony of the project of UTRC is held at CFINS

The Agreement Signing Ceremony of the project of UTRC is held at CFINS on April 8th. The project focuses on the efficient simulation and optimization of the service network. The delegate of Tsinghua University, vice-president Cen Zhangzhi, and the derictor of the UTRC, Dr. Bob Hobbs signed on the agreement.

United Technology Research Center (UTRC) focuses on researching and developing high-tech productions. It has strong ability in both research and economy. And it is famous for its production of helicopters, airplane engines, elevators, air-conditioning etc.

The delegation of UTRC visited the laboratory of CFINS after the signing ceremony. The group of CFINS reported the progress of the project. Both sides hope to cooperate further and more broadly in the future.

CFINS' first research project has contracted with UTRC

CFINS have got the first research contract with UTRC (United Technologies Researching Center).This is an international collaboration project between China and US, and it has special significance to CFINS.
